This handmade ceramic illustration is intended to cheer a friend or brighten your wall. This piece of ceramic art was made by hand in my Easthampton, Massachusetts studio.
Process: Each piece begins as a chunk of white stoneware clay. I throw the “canvases” for these ceramic illustrations on my potter’s wheel, then flip them to trim and smooth the surface before cutting the holes for hanging, slowly drying it to keep them flat, and firing. I then decorate the bisque fired piece with colored slips and underglazes using a variety of surface decoration techniques for a bright and vibrant surface. These decorative pieces may be glazed or unglazed but in either case they are fired to cone 6 in my electric kiln for durability. I add a handmade wire hanger after firing, for easy use. The rim sits against the wall and the illustrated surface sits about an inch out from the wall.
Note: Minor imperfections, variations, and quirks are part of the unique, one-of-a-kind nature of using handmade items.
